Biography

Matt Mortazavi is a dual-qualified civil engineer and lawyer with more than three decades of experience in the construction and infrastructure sector, and over 13 years dedicated to construction law and dispute resolution. His background combines technical expertise in engineering with advanced legal training, including dual LL.M. degrees from Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Toronto. This unique foundation allows him to bridge legal and technical dimensions in complex construction disputes.

He has overseen and advised on projects ranging from modest developments to multi-hundred-million-dollar infrastructure programs across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North America. His work spans transit systems, civil defense facilities, public infrastructure, and large residential projects. Alongside his engineering practice, Matt has established himself as a trusted figure in arbitration and adjudication. In recent years, he has conducted more than 80 mediations and over 35 binding arbitrations and adjudications, regularly acting under FIDIC, JCT, and CCDC frameworks.

Matt is deeply engaged in the international ADR community. In Switzerland, he is an active member of the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA) and the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA). He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), the Institute of Construction Claims Practitioners (UK), and the Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution (Malaysia). He also serves on the Board of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators – Canada Branch, where he holds the role of Honorary Treasurer. His standing in the field has been recognized by his appointment as a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators in London.

Beyond his professional practice, Matt contributes to academic and policy dialogue. Since 2013, he has lectured in construction law and contracts, shaping education for engineers and construction managers. In 2023, he was invited as an expert panelist at the United Nations in Geneva, speaking on artificial intelligence and its implications for the global legal system. This positions Matt as a leading construction law practitioner across Switzerland and global markets.
